A new Georgia poll shows that incumbent GOP Sen. Saxby Chambliss could be vulnerable if former Democratic Gov. Roy Barnes should enter the race for the Senate seat. Chambliss only polled 2 points ahead of Barnes in the new InsiderAdvantage poll.
Saxby Chambliss 42%
Roy Barnes 40%
DeKalb County CEO Vernon Jones who does not have as much name recognition statewide as Barnes was able to keep Chambliss under 50% in polling as well.
Saxby Chambliss 48%
Vernon Jones 31%
results. i also wonder if these numbers have any bearing on the GA-10 special election. is georgia finally experiencing buyer’s remorse?
If we could get Barnes in Georgia and Kitzhaber in Oregon, but for some reason they do not seem interested.
With Barnes and Cleland being unlikely, how about we think about a few other possibilities. One name I’m surprised I don’t hear getting batted around is Mike Thurmond, Georgia’s Labor Commissioner. If you check out his bio on his site, he certainly seems tantalizing:

By the second number. Georgians can correct me if I’m wrong but I don’t think Jones has a huge base of support and if he’s polling below 50 against basically a generic Dem than he’s in a lot more trouble than we thought.
these numbers are similar to collins/allen coleman/ciresi/Franken. if chambliss is as vulnerable as collins or Coleman in a VERY RED state we may be in for a VERY good cycle come 08.
I would love to see Thurbert Baker run for the senate. He was a floor leader for Zell Miller back in the 90s & he has bi-partisan appeal to white rural voters & urban black voters, or Rob Teilhet (D) Smyrna. He is a young up & coming democrat in the state & a race against Chambliss would be interesting & if he were to get in the race & beat Chambliss it would bode well for Metro Atlanta Democrats for other Statewide Offices & therefore open the flood gates of metro Atlanta Democrats. One person I think would be a darkhorse candidate would be former house majority leader Larry Walker (D) Perry. Some people wanted him to run for Zell Miller seat in 2004 but declined. He would put middle & south georgia in play & could knock off Chambliss in a race.
